Notification bug

  • Hi, I have gone through all possible troubleshooting and I still have lags and some times don't receive notifications at all using Threema. I've never had any issue with Whatsapp or Signal or Telegram. I'm just letting you know that there must be a bug and you could/must look for it. Please don't give me links because I had read them and tried everything (on 2 androids, one version 4.4 and the other is 5). Unfortunately I can't leave with this and I'm migrating, for the time being, to Signal. I really hope you fix it. Cheers.

  • Motorola Moto G dual-chip (XT1033) with Android 4.4.2 (Motorola stock + root).

Blu (don't know which model because it's not mine) with Android 5.0 (stock without root).

    * and also a tablet: Asus Nexus 7 2nd gen (2013 wifi-only) with Cyanogenmod android 5.1.

I have tried on 3 wireless networks (2 homes and 1 workplace) and 2 distinct mobile phone providers (3G and 2G). At the same time, these devices work on these places with Signal, Whatsapp and Telegram (no problem at all).

I can see other people have reported the same problem in the forum.

Push works fine for most of us.

If you experience a problem with GCM pushes, please contact support directly. Unfortunately there's not *one* single reason for this problem so each case needs to be looked at individually.

In order to be able to help you as good as possible, please provide your Threema ID and ideally an excerpt of your message_log.txt file from around the time when you missed a push message. To switch on logging, go to Settings > Troubleshooting > Log to file.

You can also send us the information directly by Threema to the ID *SUPPORT

    Best regards

  • It works if I send the message and quickly go to the home screen and let the message pop up.

I have only one contact (real person besides Threema support) on Threema. Sometimes I receive the notification. When I'm activelly chatting, I always receive the notification. If I stop for 1 or 2 minutes, don't receive notifications anymore (well, randomly I receive a notification).

  • Hi @"leoBrazil" ,
is it possible, that you have some kind of "energy saving mode" activated on your phone?

In case of yes, this mode cuts data connection in case of display is OFF.

On Sony Xperia, for instance it's the Stamina-Mode.
As I always want to receive messages via Threema, I have to set Threema manually to an exception list of Stamina-Mode.
Otherwise, no notifications will appear - only after activation of display.

  • is it possible, that you have some kind of "energy saving mode" activated on your phone?

No, Moto G does not have energy saving mode (I've been using it for 2,5 years). As I said, I've run through all the troubleshooting suggestions. WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal work. Threema doesn't.

  • Hm... Unfortunately, I don't have a Moto G, but in Internet many people seem to have the problem.
The phone (as much as I understand) really seems to disable background data in OFF-Mode - such as energy savers normally do...
Obviously there are 2 locations to enable or disable notifications.... One seems to be global, and the other seems to be for special app. (see scrreenshot - only available in German) Does this help?

And have you tested to modify the Polling option inside Threema settings? Here are my settings:

  • I have only one contact (real person besides Threema support) on Threema.

    And what about ECHOECHO?
So you could have three contacts:

    *SUPPORT - Threema support
    ECHOECHO - reply bot
    ???????? - real person

The first picture by @Miaz is about the limit of the "background data". This is basically the setting at the bottom of this screenshot. You might check whether this is activated for Threema.

  • As I said, I've run through all the troubleshooting suggestions. WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal work. Threema doesn't.

This is really strange since Signal uses the exact same way to notify the app of incoming messages.

Our support has the possibility to diagnose GCM (the push message service). Here's how you can provide our support team with all the necessary info to be able to help you best.

First, turn on logging in "Threema Settings > Troubleshooting > Log to file"

The next time you miss a notification (i.e. it arrived more than 5 minutes too late), please tap on "Threema Settings > Troubleshooting > Send Log". The email app will open. Please provide your Threema ID and a short explanation of your case or refer to this thread in the forum and finally send the email.

I am confident that we will find the cause.

  • And what about ECHOECHO?

Hello @"rugk" : ECHOECHO will IMHO not help for this problem, because in case of @"leoBrazil" receives a message by ECHOECHO, he is of cause online :D
I think, it's definitively a problem with OFF-Mode of his phone.

@"leoBrazil" really should send the Log - and the Threema specialists should have a look at the data...
